Hey brother beau, I like all three. Nikon would be the better choice. Canon is a good camera, but you just can't beat the Nikon. The nikon is a more professional camera.

I agree that with your skills the Nikon would be a better choice. You'll be able to utilize (or learn how to utilize) the extra functionality that Nikon tends to bring. I found a great link that does a comparison of three different Nikon models including the two that you put on the list (scroll about half way down for a side-by-side comparison). Looking through this I'd say go with the higher-end D70 (or D70s) model for its added flexiblity...if it's in the budget. :0P
